Frequently asked questions:

Why do I need an editor?

People choose editors for different reasons. Maybe this is your first book. Maybe grammar isn’t your strong suit or English isn’t your first language. Maybe you need a fresh pair of eyes to tell you where your story is really working and where it needs help. Considering that the publishing industry gets more competitive each year, it’s important to have a polished manuscript.

How do you calculate your rates?

I charge between $2.00-$3.00 per 250-word page. To calculate a quote, I first ask for the word count of the manuscript. Dividing the number of words by 250, I arrive at a standard “page.” Then based on the level of editing needed, I offer a per-page rate and a quote for the entire work.

What is included in your fee?

One full edit, which includes line-edits as well as plot and character suggestions and options to strengthen writing skills. I also provide a written critique with each complete manuscript.

"Through numerous unfruitful searches, I was fortunate to have found Nancy. From the start, I knew I had found a place where I could just drop my project and know it was in good hands. She was courteous, responsive, kept me well-informed week by week, and most importantly she delivered  the work amazingly on time. Her professional advice and critiques gave me the necessary confidence to fight in this man-eat-man field. She not only provides sharp eyes but also a brave heart. So much did I enjoy her work, I offered her a second project and referred a friend."

Do you do second edits?

Yes. If you choose to have me to do a second edit of a manuscript I’ve already seen, I generally lower the rates.

How do I make payments?

I ask for half of my fee up front and half upon completion. You can pay with a check, money order, or through Paypal.

How long will it take?

Usually between 3-5 weeks. For example, a 60,000-word manuscript generally takes four weeks.

Is there a charge for a rush job?

Sometimes, depending on my workload.

What if I can’t afford to do my whole manuscript at once?

You have several options. The first is to have me do a read-through, which is a high-level read for plot structure and overall stylistic elements but without line-edits. The second option is to edit the manuscript in chunks, which still allows me to fine-edit and polish a portion of your writing, but does not allow me digest the manuscript as a whole.

How do I read your edits?

I edit with Microsoft Word’s “Track Changes,” which allows you to see all my changes in red on the screen. Depending on your version of Word, my comments either appear in the margin or in yellow indicator boxes.

Can we talk by phone when you are done?

Of course.

Can you help me get an agent/publisher?

No. I am a freelance editor and therefore not affiliated with any publishing house or literary agency. I am available to give advice and help with query letters.

What if I disagree with some of your edits?

As the author, you always have the choice to agree or disagree with my suggestions. After all, I am not you!

"Unlike most book doctors, Nancy will let you know what she thinks of your
manuscript, not what she thinks you want to hear.  To me, this is priceless
